Property Taxes Are Due Oct. 15 in Fargo and Moorhead

Second-half property taxes are due Thursday, Oct. 15 in both Cass and Clay counties. What's due, what late costs, and how to pay on time.

If you own a home in Fargo, West Fargo, or Moorhead and didn't pay the whole year back in the spring, the second half of your property tax is due Thursday, October 15. For once, both sides of the river agree on the date.

Fargo and West Fargo (Cass County)

  • The second half is due by October 15. Pay it late and a 6% penalty is added.1
  • Still haven't paid the first half? October 15 is also when the first-half penalty takes its last step up, to 12%. It started at 3% on March 1 and rose on May 1 and July 1.1
  • Mailing it? The envelope has to be postmarked by the 15th. The county suggests taking it to a main post office so it gets the right postmark.1
  • Other ways to pay: online (an electronic check has no fee; cards add a convenience fee), in person at the Finance Office, or the drop box in front of the Courthouse at 211 9th St. S., which is checked several times a day.1

Moorhead (Clay County)

  • The second half is due October 15 for homesteads, cabins, agricultural homesteads, non-homesteads, and personal property. Agricultural non-homesteads get until November 15.2
  • You're on time if you pay at the Treasurer's Office by the due date, your envelope is postmarked by then, or you pay online by 11:59 p.m. that day.2
  • The penalty rates are printed on the back of your statement.2

Paying through your mortgage?

If your lender escrows your taxes, it pays them for you. You'll still get a statement in the mail, but it's for your information.3

What's next

Cass County mails next year's statements the first week of December, and paying the whole year by February 15 gets you a 5% discount on the consolidated tax (not on special assessments or drain taxes).1 In Clay County, next year's first half is due May 15.2

Our property tax due dates page counts down to each county's next deadline all year.
