🔌 Should I Plug In My Car Tonight?
Tonight's forecast low in Fargo-Moorhead, checked against CAA-Québec's block heater rule: plug in when it drops below 23°F (-5°C), and definitely at 5°F (-15°C) or colder.[1]
How long to plug in
You don't need it plugged in all night. CAA-Québec says 3 to 4 hours before you drive is enough, and suggests a timer to save on electricity.[1] Natural Resources Canada goes shorter: a timer set to turn on no more than 2 hours before you start the engine.[2] The two sources differ, so on the coldest nights we'd lean toward the longer window. That's our call, not theirs.
The rule is from a Canadian auto club because Canada publishes the clearest numbers on this. Your owner's manual has the final word on your car.
Also for cold nights: frozen pipes · below-zero tracker · road conditions. Car won't start? Here's a hand-checked list of local towing - nobody pays to be listed.
