Getting Ready for Winter in Fargo-Moorhead: A Checklist
Pipes, block heaters, frostbite, and early ice: a short, sourced checklist for the first cold snap in Fargo-Moorhead - with the numbers that matter.
The first real cold snap always seems to arrive a week before anyone's ready. Here's a short list to get through now, with the official numbers behind each one.
1. Protect your pipes
- Insulate water lines in unheated spots: the basement, crawl space, attic, garage, under sinks, and along outside walls. Caulk cracks and holes near pipes in outside walls and foundations.1
- Find your main water shut-off now, before a pipe bursts and you need it in a hurry.1
- In a deep freeze, open sink cabinets and let faucets drip. If a pipe does freeze, never thaw it with an open flame - use a space heater, heating pad, hair dryer, or hot water on a cloth.2
More on our frozen pipes guide.
2. Know when to plug in the car
CAA-Québec's rule of thumb: plug in the block heater when it drops below -5°C (23°F), and it's highly recommended at -15°C (5°F) or colder. You don't need it on all night - they say 3 to 4 hours before you drive is enough, on a timer.3 Natural Resources Canada suggests a timer set to come on no more than 2 hours before you leave.4 The two differ; on the coldest mornings we'd lean toward the longer window - that's our call.
Our plug-in page checks the forecast low every night.
3. Learn the frostbite numbers
Environment Canada's wind chill bands (the U.S. and Canada built the index together):5
- Wind chill -18°F to -39°F: exposed skin can freeze in 10 to 30 minutes.
- -40°F to -53°F: 5 to 10 minutes.
- -54°F to -66°F: 2 to 5 minutes.
- -67°F or colder: less than 2 minutes.
(Canada publishes these in °C - -28, -40, -48, and -55 - and we converted them.) The wind dashboard shows which band we're in right now.
4. Stay off early ice
North Dakota Game and Fish says stay off 2-inch ice, and wait for 4 inches of good ice to walk on it.6 And the Red River is its own case: Fargo Fire and Police warn that because of the current, river ice "is often thinner, less stable and far more dangerous" than lake ice.7 Details on our ice safety page.
5. Know the snow rules
Snow emergencies come with parking rules that differ in Fargo, West Fargo, and Moorhead. Our snow emergency guide has all three cities' rules and where to find out when one is called.
Need someone to service the snow blower or the furnace first? We keep short, hand-checked lists of small-engine repair shops and furnace & HVAC companies. Nobody pays to be listed.
